Thank you so much for the info. They say knowledge is power, and in this case, it can lessen fear as well.
Wishing you a speed and complete recovery. Thank you for all you're doing to help others at work, and for helping us understand a bit better what is actually going on.

Is there any way to do a green screen kind of thing? You know, put a fake background behind you, like maybe a running clip of a strip club or even a sports bar.
Even funnier if you could put a more interesting background behind other people’s video feed. Just for fun, of course. Just long enough to get a laugh or two and then back to normal.

Legal Concerns About "Zoom" Meetings!
by Atlantis inthis whole "zoom" thing has got me wondering whether some of it is legal or not.
if a person has to dress up for a zoom meeting the way the watchtower dictates, doesn't this really go "beyond" cult?.
even the cults who committed mass suicide were able to dress the way they wanted for their meetings.

I’m with you! Nothing screams CULT louder than requiring adherents to place cameras in their homes so the leaders can see what they’re wearing and make sure they’re paying attention.
Just allowing unknown people a view into your home through access to a video feed seems extremely risky. Who, exactly, is watching you and noticing that you seem vulnerable and have stuff that might be worth taking? Especially since few JWs are equipped to defend themselves or their homes.
I think the main reason the Society is so intent on continuing the meetings by whichever means is so they can keep up the
encouragementpressure to send those contributions in. “Why, we even have the loving provision from Jehovah of setting up regular donations right from your bank account or credit card.” -

There is plenty to criticize and ridicule the Society about, and I like to be among the first to do so, but I see nothing nefarious here. From a business standpoint, buying these homes to house temporary workers and then selling them off makes sense.
You might think they'd make them available first to needy "faithful long-time servants," but we all know the chance of that happening.
The fact that no one is being forked over by this particular deal takes nothing away from the fact that the Society is a greedy money-grubbing mind-control cult from which there is no honorable exit. Once in, you cannot leave without losing all your family and friends that stay in. I hate this blanking religion and what it does to otherwise good people!

The Valhalla Murders - Netflix
by Dagney inweekend netflix binging.
this series has a sub-story of one of the detectives raised as a jw.
you can tell the details aren’t exactly correct, but the intent to show familial shunning and it’s affects are loud and clear.

I, too, thought it interesting that being shunned by JW family was used as a subplot involving a main character in this series. It must be a commonly known practice or its depiction wouldn't make sense to the viewers, because the series doesn't go into much detail.
We can surmise the character is either DF or DA because a JW elder tries to convince him to "come back." The reason he is being shunned isn't clearly explained, but it seems likely that he simply stopped believing in the Truth™ and left because he refused to fake it. A totally incongruous and unnecessary scene might hint at something else, but every production nowadays has to include something like that to be "inclusive."
The character's sister, evidently an active JW, surreptitiously tries to inform him of their father's impending death but is opposed and shut down by her overbearing husband and other elders. His work associates cannot understand why he doesn't want to go to his own father's funeral. Only a shunned ex-JW will really get it.
I thought the shunning was totally realistic. The JWs went "beyond what is written," (more than is actually required), but this frequently happens in real life. The way it can affect those subjected to it is also realistic.
The Kingdom Hall he forced himself to go to for the funeral was far nicer and more elaborate than any I've ever seen. Definitely not the new "dentist office" model. The funeral service he walked in on bears no resemblance to an actual JW funeral talk, but that's beside the point. It was also unrealistic that elders confronted him and tried to physically remove him even though he wasn't causing a disturbance. The point is he was being shunned and rejected, even by his own family, because he is no longer a member of the group.
Maybe the awful way he was treated will make people wonder why and expose this cruel practice to even more scrutiny. We can always hope...
Note: This was a comment I posted on the ex-JW Reddit site on the same topic a few days ago. I thought it was relevant here as well.

GB to ship TP
by Smiles in"the governing body loves you!".
the gb lovingly spends millions to ship literature everywhere.
the gb lovingly has toilet paper regularly delivered to elite watch tower facilities around the world.. will the unfailing love of the gb move them to ship toilet paper to their needy followers?

It's entirely appropriate that they ship toilet paper along with the "spiritual food" they foist upon their followers.

Invading our homes

Did they really tell people to turn on their cameras? Anybody have a reference for this?
I don't say it's impossible, but I seriously doubtl they went that far. Most people value their privacy a bit too much for that. Just sayin'...
As far as instructing the sheeple to wear meeting clothes when streaming the meetings, that's not entirely without basis. Most employers ask their employees to dress appropriately even when working from home, and it is recommended that home schoolers make their children dress as if going to school for their lessons. It has to do with setting the right frame of mind. Don't shoot the messenger! Just relaying what I've read.

Are YOU a JW parasite?
by The Fall Guy inevery single member of the worldwide order of special full-time servants of jehovah’s witnesses (yb16 p. 176 2015 grand totals) – which includes all of the governing body, all bethelites, every jw missionary, every circuit overseer, and all special pioneers – are worse than people without* faith!
because they have all signed a vow of poverty which renders them as parasites, living off other people's earnings.
where in the bible is that a “principle”?

I have no problem with certain members of a religious group being supported by the voluntary contributions of other members. You wanna spend your life chasing an invisible sky-daddy and doing (what others say is) his will, go ahead! You wanna give your hard earned money to support self-appointed representatives of said sky-daddy, go ahead!
I have a BIG problem with groups that claim to be a charity (to get government benefits and handouts) but don't actually do any charity.
And I have a BIG problem with individuals who manipulate their situation to suck off the public teet so they can spend time in religious activities instead of actually working. In many cases, this is outright fraud. If it ever came to my attention that someone was on welfare or food stamps so they could "afford" to pioneer when they could be working for a living, I would report them in an instant. I'd consider it a public service. Perpetrating a fraud on the public so you can spend your time "volunteering" instead of working is blatant hypocrisy.
You wanna chase rainbows and indulge your superstitions, go ahead! Just do it on your own time and on your own dime.

Thanks, Petra! My MacBook said it couldn't secure a connection to the server for the individual letters, but I was able to download the zip file. Very interesting.
Thanks again!
